Small animal internal medicine v.s surgery? How to differentiate?

Every time before seeing a vet, you might be wondering which department you should register for. Internal medicine and Surgery are usually categorized according to "type of treatment"one will receive:

If your pet requires surgery for treatment → Surgery

If your pet is more likely to have non-surgical treatment → Internal medicine

Thus, we recommend owners go to general practitioners (i.e., family vets) familiar with their pets' condition, and then refer to specialties/subspecialties according to their suggestions.

What does Otolaryngology Head and Neck surgery usually treat?

Any condition above the neck [besides eyes , teeth , brain / spine] belongs to the scope of Otolaryngology (ENT) Head and Neck surgery. Most diseases relating to ear (e.g. otitis externa) and nose (e.g. chronic rhinitis) belong to [Internal Medicine], which will be referred to [Surgery] only when [Internal Medicine fails to control effectively].

By definition, Otorhinolaryngology is a subspecialty that deals with surgical and medical management of conditions; however, due to limited medical capacity, we would suggest patients with minor issues (such as otitis externa or rhinitis) go to Family Vet or Internal Medicine, allowing other patients with surgical needs to be treated as early as possible. If the Vet suggests that surgical intervention is required, you can then refer to ENT for further consultation and treatment.

Should I go to the ENT clinic for a seizure (epilepsy)?

Epilepsy is associated with the head; the head is above the neck. So, should I refer to ENT? Well, a seizure is a sudden, uncontrolled burst of electrical activity in the brain, and as we mentioned earlier, the brain does not belong to Otolaryngology Surgery. The brain is a part of the central nervous system, so you should refer to Neurology instead.
